New Mental Health Workforce Hub to strengthen mental health professionals and researchers

09 October 2024

Whether you’re just starting your mental health career or looking for the next step on your journey, Health Translation Queensland’s new Mental Health Workforce Hub is the ideal go-to resource to guide and support you.

In one central online location, the Hub offers inspiring career profiles from real professionals currently working in the mental health sector, an overview of different career pathways, latest research case studies as well as training and education opportunities and events.

The Hub also offers a feature to connect and collaborate with other mental health professionals – supporting the mental health workforce one connection at a time.

HTQ Executive Director, Professor John Prins, said the new Mental Health Workforce Hub is designed to empower and strengthen the mental health workforce.

“We believe the Hub will become a central go-to resource for current and future mental health professionals.

“The idea for the Hub originated from HTQ’s 2023 Health Research Needs Assessment, which identified mental health as a top priority area in health research and translation.”

In any year, one in 5 Queenslanders will experience mental illness. At a national level, over 2 in 5 – or 8.6 million – Australians aged 16 to 85 years are estimated to have experienced a mental disorder at some point in their life. In addition, 14% of children and adolescents aged 4 to 17 years are estimated to have experienced a mental illness in the previous 12 months.

“The way we can tackle the long list of mental health issues is to educate and train the next generation of mental health professionals – a workforce for now and for the future,” John Prins said.

“The Hub is HTQ’s latest initiative helping to build a stronger, more knowledgeable mental health workforce – a vital element to help combat these stark mental health statistics.”

HTQ’s project manager Sarah Scott explained the development of the Hub was a collaborative project guided by HTQ’s Mental Health Collaborative Group.

“A diverse range of Queensland’s mental health professionals and researchers from across the HTQ partnership and beyond volunteered their experience and expertise to this project,” said Sarah Scott.

“We are so grateful to the people involved in our Mental Health Collaborative Group who shared their passion, ideas and feedback throughout the development and user testing of the Hub.”
