Federal Budget 2026-27: HTQ and AHRA welcome investment in research translation

14 May 2026

Health Translation Queensland (HTQ), together with its peak body the Australian Health Research Alliance (AHRA), has welcomed the Australian Government’s 2026-27 Federal Budget measures to strengthen Australia’s health and medical research pipeline, support translation into better care, and increase investment through the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF).

AHRA Chair, Professor Carol Hodgson, said the Budget recognises the importance of sustained investment across the full research continuum – from discovery and clinical trials through to implementation in health care settings and improved outcomes for patients and communities.

“The increased investment in the Medical Research Future Fund is an important and welcome commitment to Australia’s health and medical research future,” Professor Hodgson said.

“The planned increase in MRFF disbursements to $1 billion annually from 2030-31 provides much needed confidence for the sector and reinforces the importance of health and medical research as a national priority.”

AHRA welcomed the Government’s commitment of an additional $508.5 million over 4 years to increase MRFF disbursements, noting the importance of finalising the National Health and Medical Research Strategy to unlock this investment.

“Strong and sustained investment is essential to ensure Australia maintains a robust research pipeline – one that supports discovery, builds workforce capability, enables clinical trials and translates evidence into real-world health impact,” Professor Hodgson said.

“As Australia’s national network of research translation centres, AHRA sees firsthand how investment in collaborative, translation-focused research improves health outcomes, strengthens health systems and delivers value to patients, communities and the economy.”

“These investments are critical to strengthening Queensland’s capacity to translate evidence into practice and support more connected, learning-focused health systems,” said Tammy Sovenyhazi, Health Translation Queensland’s new Interim Executive Director.

“HTQ looks forward to continuing to work alongside AHRA, our partners and government to strengthen research capability and improve health outcomes across metropolitan, regional and rural communities,” she said.
