New Action Plan to accelerate health innovation and research across Queensland

25 July 2025

The Queensland Government is backing in the translation of high-quality research into clinical practice for the benefit of all Queenslanders.

The two National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) accredited Research Translation Centres operating across Queensland – the Tropical Australian Academic Health Centre (TAAHC) and Health Translation Queensland (HTQ) – were recently awarded $1 million each from NHMRC to support their work in accelerating the translation of health innovation and research into practice.

As part of this commitment, Health Translation Queensland (HTQ) has launched a new Action Plan for 2025–2027 to better connect research and health services, support clinicians, and deliver real-world improvements to patient care across the state.

Developed in close collaboration with 12 of Queensland’s leading health and research organisations, including Queensland Health, the plan reflects a united approach to tackling priority health challenges across the partnership.

Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Tim Nicholls said the new Action Plan would embed research-led innovation into health services and culture across the state.

“The Queensland Government applauds HTQ for its new Action Plan, because we know a smarter, more connected health system—one that uses research and innovation—translates to real improvements in care for all Queenslanders, no matter where they live in the state,” Minister Nicholls said.

Queensland Health Director-General Dr David Rosengren said the Action Plan aligns with the Department’s new Strategic Plan 2025-2029 and its vision for a dynamic and responsive health system with a valued and empowered workforce delivering world class health services for Queenslanders.

“This plan will help us better harness the power of research to solve system-wide challenges, streamline research translation processes, and support the next generation of clinician-researchers,” he said.

West Moreton Health’s Chief Executive Hannah Bloch said that the Action Plan would leverage the capability across the 12 partners to address system problems through research and innovation.

“The plan is about solving health service issues—together,” she said.

HTQ’s Interim Executive Director, Dr Celia Webby, said the Action Plan represents a collective commitment from south-east Queensland’s major health and research institutions to translate knowledge into practice more effectively.

“We are building the structures, tools and partnerships that clinicians and health researchers need to innovate, lead research and make evidence-based improvements in care,” Dr Webby said.
