Health Translation Queensland appoints new Executive Director

06 February 2023

Health Translation Queensland (HTQ) is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor John Prins as its new Executive Director.

Health Translation Queensland Chair Sue Scheinpflug said Professor Prins’ appointment followed an extensive and highly competitive recruitment process.

“The Board is very excited to welcome Professor Prins to our organisation,” she said.

“He is a respected clinician-researcher and thought leader in Australia and has held significant corporate leadership roles across the academic, health and pharmaceutical sectors.

“Professor Prins is a strong, collaborative leader with a clear vision for health translation in Queensland. As a former Interim CEO of Brisbane Diamantina Health Partners (now HTQ) from 2015-2016, he deeply understands our partners’ needs and the challenges facing healthcare and medical research.”

Professor Prins said: “I look forward to helping HTQ improve health outcomes in Queensland.”

“I aim to achieve this by improving communication, collaboration, and efficiencies across the broader healthcare and medical research sectors, from discovery science right through to patient care in regional and rural areas.

“I’m very pleased to return to HTQ after my involvement early in its formation, including our early applications for National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) accreditation as an Advanced Health Research and Translation Centre.”

Professor Prins is an active clinician scientist, a respected thought leader in diabetes and endocrinology in Australia and sits on numerous grant review and advisory committees for NHMRC, non-government organisations and industry.

Professor Prins undertook his clinical training in endocrinology in Brisbane and then completed a PhD in adipose tissue biology at The University of Queensland. He undertook postdoctoral training at the University of Cambridge and was awarded a Wellcome Senior Research Fellowship in Medical Sciences in 1998.

His previous roles include Director, Metro South Hospital and Health Service Board; Interim Group CEO, Mater Misericordiae Ltd (Mater Group); Director Mater Research Institute-UQ and CEO Mater Medical Research Institute Ltd; Senior Endocrinologist, Princess Alexandra Hospital; and Professor of Endocrinology, University of Queensland. Before re-joining Health Translation Queensland, Professor Prins was Head of the Melbourne Medical School at the University of Melbourne.

Throughout his career he has received more than $35M in research and commercialisation funding, has published over 160 research publications with over 14,300 citations and holds four international patents.
