Queensland Health is responsible for the overall management of the Queensland public health system. It provides leadership and direction and works collaboratively to enable the health system to deliver quality services that are safe and responsive for Queenslanders.

To ensure Queenslanders receive the best possible care, the Department of Health has entered into a service agreement with each of the 16 hospital and health services to deliver public services in their local area. The department’s role includes promoting the efficient and effective use of resources and developing statewide plans for health services, workforce and major capital investment. It also delivers specialised health services, providing ambulance, health information and communication technology and support services to hospital and health services.

The Department of Health and its partners strive to provide better health outcomes for all Queenslanders through continuous improvement and innovation in order to deliver the greatest health benefit with the available resources.
